CIRCULAR SYSTEMS

Single-use recycling is not the solution

Recycling is widely perceived as the only solution for reprocessing our enormous amounts of waste. Unfortunately, in reality most waste is downcycled or incinerated. Reuse as a tool of the circular economy, on the other hand, keeps packaging in the loop and thereby avoids waste.

We are drowning in single-use waste!

188,7 kg

average packaging waste per person per year in the EU (according to Eurostat 2025).

1,6 %

of the 14.8 billion to-go packaging units in 2023 in Germany were reusable (according to WWF DE, 2024)

95 %

of plastics are single-use and are discarded after just one use (according to World Economic Forum, 2016)

only 16 %

of post-consumer plastic waste in Germany is recycled into new products (according to Heinrich Böll Stiftung, 2021).

Reuse is a system solution

Reuse is more than a packaging solution. In the best sense of the circular economy, reuse enables the transition from linear value chains to closed loops where resources are reused rather than lost. In doing so, reuse addresses multiple ecological challenges simultaneously. Resources are conserved, waste is avoided, and environmental impacts along the entire value chain are reduced: water, raw material consumption, and CO₂ emissions.

When does reuse make ecological sense?

Reuse works through participation. Higher cycle numbers amplify the positive ecological benefits.

High return rate:

Only returned packaging can be used multiple times

High number of uses:

With each reuse, the ecological footprint per packaging unit decreases

High acceptance:

A simple system increases participation and returns

Meaningful areas of application:

Reuse has the fastest impact when material-intensive packaging is replaced (plastic, aluminum, or glass)

Low-material product design:

A resource-efficient design reduces material use and packaging weight

Efficient logistics:

Short transport routes, bundled reverse logistics, and lightweight packaging additionally reduce emissions

Less resource consumption through reuse

Reusable packaging causes up to 89% less waste compared to single-use across the entire lifecycle (at 30 uses)*. In some cases, less material and resources are used after just two uses.*representative according to EINFACH MEHRWEG's verified life cycle assessment (ISO 14040/14044 compliant): comparison of 30x TO-GO use with 30x single-use at the salad bar

Less water consumption through reuse

After just three uses, reuse on average requires less water across the entire lifecycle than single-use packaging.* The production of raw materials is typically far more water-intensive than washing.*representative according to EINFACH MEHRWEG's verified life cycle assessment (ISO 14040/14044 compliant): comparison of 30x TO-GO use with 30x single-use at the salad bar

Less CO₂e emissions from

Sykell PREFILL

Compared to semi-rigid and rigid single-use packaging, Einfach Mehrweg PREFILL reduces CO₂e after just two to seven uses.* Fundamentally, the type of single-use packaging being replaced by reuse is decisive for the climate impact.*based on internal calculations using the proprietary ISO 14040/14044 compliant Product Carbon Footprint tool

Less CO₂e emissions from

Sykell TO-GO

After three uses, Sykell TO-GO on average causes less CO₂e emissions than single-use plastic packaging, and after 14 uses less than paper packaging.**representative according to Einfach Mehrwegs verified life cycle assessment (ISO 14040/14044 compliant): comparison of 30x TO-GO use with 30x single-use at the salad bar.

How much CO2e does your product save with reuse?

Reuse works! Reuse systems reduce waste and water consumption after just a few uses and reach their full CO2e savings potential at scale.

Pre-packaged food:

We'd be happy to calculate the CO₂e savings potential for you using our Product Carbon Footprint tool.
