Why is the PPWR relevant for Retailers?

The PPWR enters into force in 2026, with the first binding obligations apply from 2030. As the direct interface to consumers, food retail plays a key role in implementing waste prevention and reuse measures.

Documentation and declaration of conformity

From 2026, obligation for a conformity assessment and technical documentation for all packaging placed on the market

Ab 2029 Reduzierung des Luftvolumens in Transport- (50 %) und Verkaufsverpackungen 

 

Art.10

Bans on certain single-use plastic packaging

From 2030, large plastic bundle packaging at the point of sale (POS), packaging for fruit and vegetables under 1.5 kg, miniature packaging, and packaging for on-site consumption will be prohibited.

 

Art. 25

Angebot von Refill Stationen

Offer on 10% of the area for refill stations in sales areas of more than 400 m² (non-binding)

 

Art. 28

Reuse quotas for transport packaging

From 2030, 40% (70% by 2040) reusable packaging for cross-border, nationally up to 100% (still to be determined). From 2030, 10% (25% by 2040) for grouped packaging in crates used outside of sales (excluding cardboard)

Obligations when offering reuse

Ab 2030 Verbot großer Kunststoff-Bündelverpackungen, Miniaturverpackungen sowie Verpackungen für den Vor-Ort-Verzehr.
